Greetings and welcome to the Refuge,

Thank you for taking the time to take our Refuge 101 class. This class is designed to be a brief and informative tour to get you familiar with what Refuge is all about as you consider becoming a part of our ministry team.

We want you to know who we are, where we’

ve been as well as what we believe, what our mission is and how we hope to accomplish that mission.

We know that this region is filled with great churches, each with a unique culture and vision. Choosing a church to connect with is kind of like waiting on a bus bench for your bus to come along. It’

s important to make sure you get on the right bus or you may never reach your desired destination. We want you to know where this bus called Refuge is going.

We certainly hope you become a fully engaged Refugee, working with us to further the proclamation of the Gospel here in Huntington Beach and around the world.

    Welcome to the Refuge team

Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?"

Amos 3:3 Can two walk together unless they are in agreement?

Psalm 133 Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing – Life evermore.

Phil. 1:27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel.

Eph. 4:1-3 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Where Are We Going? – Our Mission

Our mission here at Refuge is to be a community of compassionate followers of Jesus Christ offering a safe environment to all who are seeking to connect or reconnect with God through Jesus Christ.

    “One – One – One

: – The name above every name – “There salvation in any other for there is no other name under heaven, given among men whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

: Hawaiians call it . We call it family and it’s bigger than our local fellowship. We recognize the larger family of God made up of all those who confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They are from every continent and all nation (ethnos) on earth – at least those nations that have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “Through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” Eph. 2:13-19

: To love God with all everything we are by loving those within our reach. We will obey Jesus’ last command and go into all the world with the comforting message of the Gospel. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations . . .” Matt. 18:18-20

    What “Refuge” means to us

Refuge is a – God is not an unknowable, distant deity. He is revealed in scripture as our Father. He invites us to make Him our hiding place, strong tower, shelter and haven. Psalm 46:1 & 61 / Ruth 2:10-14

Refuge is a – A “sheltering family”. Receive one another just as Christ also received us. Romans 14:1 & 15:7

Refuge is a – Any location where God’s people do God’s business becomes a refuge, a safe place where seeking souls can find a family of Jesus’ followers who will help them understand the truth of God’s word as well as provide a genuine community within which they can grow in their relationship with God and one another. Acts. 2:46-47 Numbers 35 Joshua 21

“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house they ate their bread with simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

    In other words . . . Refuge is a place where .

    Please Call Him “Father”

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame, He remembers that we are dust.
    Psalm 103:13-14

God is our father. Jesus told us to address God as our father. That is not metaphor. We truly are His children. Designed, created, sustained by God. We were made to know God. As a lost child has one need; to be reunited with their father, the one crucial need in all humanity is to live our life in an intimate relationship with our heavenly Father whom David says “pities” us.

To be pitied by God is much different than the pity we feel for those involved in some distant tragedy thousands of miles away. God’s pity translates into tangible mercy, provision, forgiveness & sustaining grace. Every day God’s pity impacts my life. He remembers what I am made of; weak and valueless dust. But He loves and embraces this dust, making us more than dust. Redeemed dust destined for a glorious transformation on the day we become like Him. May I become content to know that I am His beloved dust, and that He allows me to call Him Father.

Thank You, Father for sweeping up the dust of my life and making me Yours.

    In Jesus’ Strong Name
    Bill

Refuge Membership: Where Do I Sign?

We don’t do membership at Refuge in the traditional manner. We believe that all true followers of Jesus Christ are members of His church and therefore should live accountably toward one another.

We also believe that God has raised up this Church for a specific purpose in these last days and in order to accomplish that purpose it is essential that we both worship and work together as members one of another under the leadership of the Holy Spirit and the lordship of Jesus Christ.

    A. to God (Romans 12:1) and see why God has planted you in this fellowship. Then, discover your gifts and the calling of God in your own life.

    B. to show yourself approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:15). As you grow in your relationship with God, let him prepare you for effective service.

    C. to the work of Jesus Christ in this fellowship. Get involved anywhere He directs. We should all be saying what Isaiah said: "Here I am, Send Me!"

    D. in a home group or small group with other members of Refuge.  All ministry happens in the context of relationship with other people, saved and unsaved.  Do the next thing God places before you.  Serve God fervently as you joyfully serve other people.

    E. Attend the “ ” then decide (after completing each class) which area of ministry you believe God is leading you into.

    F. Approach ministry leaders to .

    G. Do all that you do with a (hilarious, joy-filled). 2 Cor. 9:7

Remember that it is actually the Lord that you are serving and He will reward you.  Col. 3:24.      So let’s serve as unto the Lord!

    How We Operate: Our structure

There are many models of church structure. Here’s ours.

: The true head of the church. Eph. 5:23/Matt. 16:18

: The senior pastor is directly responsible to God for the well-being and nurture of this local church, feeding them the word of God and seeking God’s direction for the congregation. 1 Peter 5:1-4

: Assistant pastors share the task of providing sound Bible teaching counsel for the members of the church along with accomplishing administrative tasks. 2 Tim. 2:2

: Staff members are added to in the daily operation of the church, including business, financial, communication, janitorial, admin. etc. Acts 6:3-4

: Men and women with a calling to work in a particular area of ministry assist in the leadership of many programs of the church. Most of these are non-paid volunteers without which the church would not be able to effectively operate.

: The church board is set in place to provide business, legal and financial accountability in the making of major decisions. The board is lead by the senior pastor and meets monthly.

Every is a : We believe every true believer has a calling and spiritual gifts, given by God to be used in some aspect of the operation and ministry of the church. 1 Cor. 12:7, 11 & Eph. 4:7

    It All Comes Down To

    • Do all that we do with a 2 Cor. 9:7
    • A servant has in mind. Phil. 2:4
    • Remember that it is actually the Lord that you are and He will you. Col. 3:24

A Word of Encouragement For The Weary

Because faithfulness in ministry is crucial to a team fulfilling their objectives and because those who put their whole heart into serving Jesus Christ may experience occasional “burn-out”, let’s answer the question “What do we do when the joy of serving is gone?”

    • Check the . Galatians 6:9-10
    • Check your . Ephesians 6:6
    • Check your .
    • Refuse the temptation to & .
    • Talk to your about how you are feeling.
    • Pray with him/her asking God to (John 15:11) and direction.
    • In some cases it is good to take a but as quickly as possible return to the assignment God has given you unless you believe He is changing that assignment.
    • Don't replace with (except for a short break) Mark 6:31. Get back in the saddle.

    A Final Reminder

is the guiding principle governing all relationships within the church.

    • John 13:34-35 - Love one another.
    • Eph 5:15-21 submit to one another in the fear of God.

The bottom line in all we do: " "
    • He alone sets people free.
    • He alone saves.
    • He alone restores the shattered heart and soul of man.
